Big changes are underway at The Urban Dog as I transition from in-person teaching to focus on my research career at Aberystwyth University.
You can still train with me through the online Urban Freestyle or Cooperative Care courses.
The Puppy Training Program is for puppies up to 5-6 months old at start. We work through ‘life skills’ like lead walking, not jumping up on people, come back when called, settling, create great socialisation experiences and make training fun! The program is for you, if you are keen to learn reward based training and practice consistently. The classes are located just outside of Exeter, 3 locations in Ide, Poltimore and Kentisbeare.
Format:
This program is designed to get you started the most effective way raising your puppy.
The combination of 4 group training classes, 2 adventure walks and a 1-2-1 training allows us to create the most comprehensive learning experiences in all aspects of life with your puppy through this important period. It also ensures that you practice in real life situations, too. See more details below.

Puppy Training Classes
6 lessons, the lessons are 1hr long
in Ide/ Kentisbeare/ Poltimore
The classes provide a safe and focused environment for you and your puppy to learn basic obedience and improve puppy social skills in these progressive sessions.
Skills:
Basic obedience: sit, down, stay, recall, walking nicely on a loose lead
Also, you and your puppy will learn about working together as a team and that training is fun! We will practice self control exercises, confidence and relationship building games, work on social skills.
Our outside training area is in Ide, just outside of Exeter, you will receive detailed instructions upon booking.
In case of very bad weather the outside lessons will be held online, a zoom link will be sent to you on the day with instructions.
The Poltimore and Kentisbeare classes are indoor classes.
Our private facebook group provides homework and extra information, available upon booking.
1-2-1 Training Session
1x 1,5hrs
Tailored only for you and your puppy! Depends on what we are working on, I visit you in your home and /or we take the training to your regular walk to practice and come up with a personal strategic training plan for you to follow.
We address possible problem behaviours like jumping up, nipping, barking, stay home alone, resource guarding.
We often work with other family members, involve the kids, create good practices around cats or other pets.
We schedule the session throughout the course or upon booking. If you would like, extra 1-2-1 sessions available.
Puppy Adventure Walks
2x 1hr walk around Exeter
On the walks we take the training to the real world as we explore different places in/around Exeter with a group.
Through these experiences we build your puppy`s confidence and listening skills; they make friends with other puppies and people and they can play off lead where it’s safe.
This is a very important socialisation experience for your puppy and you will learn how to do the training in real life. We will observe your puppy’s body language to see where he needs help coping and you learn ways to bring up a blanced dog.

Our younger Golden Retriever attended Eszter’s Puppy classes and we found that Eszter has an ability to read each dog’s character and trains accordingly. The Puppy classes included real life scenarios such as Exeter Quay and Cranbrook. We currently attend 3 of Eszter’s classes – UK Dog Sports, Activity Booster and Scent Work. I have absolutely loved attending Eszter’s puppy and intermediate courses with my now 5 month old pup. Eszter is super knowledgeable and obviously really loves dogs – she has been willing to help between classes and for issues that aren’t related to things we’ve done in class too (crate training, diet, etc).
